Neuromuscular Taping (NMT)
Neuromuscular Taping (NMT) is a specialised therapeutic taping technique that uses elastic, breathable tape applied in precise anatomical patterns to support lymphatic drainage, reduce swelling, and improve tissue function. Unlike rigid athletic taping, NMT works dynamically with movement, gently lifting the skin to create space between the skin, fascia, and underlying tissues.
From an anatomical perspective, this lifting effect reduces pressure in the interstitial space and helps improve microcirculation of blood and lymphatic fluid. This supports the body’s natural lymphatic drainage system, helping to reduce fluid congestion, inflammation, and tissue restriction.
NMT is particularly effective in the management of scar tissue and post-surgical recovery, including after cosmetic surgery, orthopaedic procedures, and post-cancer treatment care. It can help improve restricted range of motion (ROM) caused by swelling, fibrosis, or tissue tightness, and is often used to support recovery in clients with lymphoedema or lipoedema.
It is also beneficial in supporting pelvic and hormonal-related discomfort, including symptoms such as menstrual pain, pelvic congestion, and heavy menstrual flow, by improving local circulation and tissue balance in the affected area.
Because the tape continuously works 24/7 while applied, NMT acts like a gentle extension of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), providing ongoing support to the lymphatic system between treatments.
Key Benefits of Neuromuscular Taping
✔️ Supports lymphatic drainage and reduces swelling and oedema
✔️ Improves post-surgical recovery (including cosmetic and post-cancer surgery)
✔️ Helps soften and manage scar tissue and fibrosis
✔️ Improves restricted range of motion (ROM) due to swelling or tissue tightness
✔️ Reduces inflammation and supports tissue healing
✔️ Assists lymphoedema and lipoedema management
✔️ Supports circulation and reduces heaviness or congestion
✔️ May help with menstrual discomfort and pelvic-related tension
✔️ Works continuously to support the lymphatic system between treatments
How it works
NMT is often used alongside Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and other manual therapies to enhance and prolong treatment results. It is a gentle, non-invasive technique designed to support the body’s natural recovery processes rather than force structural change.
